Put a little kindness in the world

Lyric Kinard at http://lyrickinard.blogspot.co.nz/2012/03/kindness-chronicles_04.html   has written a great blog about being kind.  What can we do to be kind in the world?  She has listed listed some wonderful ideas and challenged us to make an effort to be kind.  So here is some of the kind things I have done these past couple of weeks....
  • Told a lady at the supermarket she looked beautiful (this one always embarrasses my kids)
  • Made smoothies for breakfast for everyone
  • Told a child her hair looked lovely
  • Phoned a friend have troubles
  • Prayed for a friend in need
  • Popped in and saw a friend whose dad is sick
  • Did a chore normally assigned to one of my kids
  • Sat and listened to a teenager
  • Defended a person who was being put down
  • Gave away produce from my garden (this one was kind to me too....does this count?)
What have you done kind this month.  Join us on our quest for kindness

My daughter leaves this week to university.  She is going to be 6 hours away by car and I am going to miss her so much.  I just hope that I have taught her enough and given her enough skills so she can survive.

It is a funny feeling to let a child leave the nest.  So much time is invested in this amazing person  My life has been so much part of hers for 18 years  and now within 1 day she will be more independent and not in my life each day.  Part of me is celebrating her Independence and part of me wants to go back to when she was 2 and I was the centre of her world.  Life is like that though.  Life moves on whether I want to too or even if I am ready too.  It sometimes seems to to go so fast and other times slower that I think it can be possible.

What do I want her to do?
  • Eat well
  • Wash your clothes
  • Clean up after yourself so you don't get swamped down.
  • Love
  • Laugh
  • Have fun
  • Look after yourself first so you can give to others
  • Be nice
  • Serve others
  • Work hard
  • Go to church
If I could tell her anything I would say
  • Be kind and thoughtful
  • Be patient
  • Have good integrity
  • Remember you are a child of God
  • Remember God is always there for you and he loves you
  • Be proud of your name and wear it well
  • Always stand up for what you believe in
  • Be careful and give trust away when it has been earned
  • Enjoy being you
In reality I will probably just tell her that I love her and hope all those lessons I have taught her in the last 18 years will already be cemented in her heart.  I need to trust that she already knows these things and will do herself proud.  Boy this is such a hard thing to do but I know I will survive.  I have done it once already and I made it to the next day in one piece.

Managing a home with a positive spirit

Do you have days where it feels everything is just collapsing around you?  Days where everything coming at you is negative, draining and filled with frustration. The moans, complaints,  constant listening,  and always having to be on board at your best.  If you do you are not alone.

This picture seems like me sometimes at home trying to stay on top of things and not to get dragged down by others.
One thing I have learnt though is that........

Having a positive outlook even when things seem to beat down on you is imperative.  How can we as mum/women remain positive and have good emotional health amongst all this battering and to be able to follow your dreams.

Taking a sleep always feels like a good option :)  but unfortunately the problem is still there when you wake up.  sigh......

I have found some things that work well
  • Take time out daily.  Even if it is only listening to a piece of music you love or reading a chapter of a book.  I have had to become very creative to get my reading time (as I am a book worm)  I have book on the toilet that I read 2 pages of when I use the loo.  It takes me a while to get through a book but at least I can get a little bit of time to read.
  • Remember that you are the manager of the house.  Would you let your staff treat you like dirt?   I certainly wouldn't.  It doesn't matter whether it is a child or an adult in your home protect yourself.  Be direct though IE I don't like it when you talk to me like that can you please stop.  If you chose not to I will have your phone..... I will walk out the room......I will put you in time out ..... We are not punching bags but human being that need respect
  • If I get a complaint for any child about a job they have been given I give them another one.  They learn fast!
  • If I feel negative I read some inspiring quotes or I read a motivational book.
  • Phone someone.  A problem shared is a problem halved.
  • Get out of the house on your own once a week.  I know this can be had a certain times of life but I know it can be achieved.  One thing that worked for me when I had very young children was to swap babysitting with another mum.  This meant we both got out once a week. I found I had to schedule time so I became a priority
  • Take time to seek to understand before you try to be understood.   (This is one of Steven Covey's principles.) Just by understanding people your attitude can shift.
  • Plan successes in your life.....don't plan to fail. Make small goals and stick to them
  • Learn what drains you.  My biggest drain in being disorganised.  The more organised I am the more positive I am.  Work out what is your biggest drain in your life and make a change.
  • Serve others.  I can be much more positive when I help others.
  • Learn to say no to unimportant things.  Just focus on what gives true happiness and true fulfilment

What do you do to stay positive?

The girl who silenced the world for 5 mins

This clip is a number of years old but still is so relevant for all of us today.

Most of us can't change the whole world but we can make a difference to the community we live in.

What are WE going to do to make our part of the world a better place?
What are WE going to do to clean up our community?
What are We going to do for our starving children of country?

Be inspired!

Christmas

This week has been lovely after a few weeks of hectic running around.  I am finally catching up on a little sleep and feeling a little more normal (if I ever am normal  he he)   I love the week leading up to Christmas.  The secret rustles,  giggling and 'hide and seek'  with gifts.  I love the genuine love of people and care. I wish this could carry on all year.  I love also the little secrets we do as a family for others.  It gives us lovely warn fuzzies and excitement for the recipients of our secrets.

With all the commercialism of Christmas is is so easy to get caught up in the trims and trappings.  How can we remember the true reason for Christmas?   How can we get back to simplicity and celebrating the birth of Christ and spend quality time as a family?  Here are some things that work for us

  • K.I.S.S Keep it simple sister.  Is is really necessary to make 20 ginger bread houses for gifts?
  • Serve others.  For our 12 days of Christmas this year we have done acts of service for each other in our home.  I.E  1st day one act,  2nd day 2 acts etc.  It has been really fun and has brought a lovely feel into our house
  • Visit with neighbours
  • Visits with elderly and those with no family
  • Bake and drop off secretly on door steps
  • Decorate letter boxes in your neighbour hood.  Maybe even tape lollipops to the boxes too.
  • Play traditional Christmas music
  • Have all you meals together
  • Make a handmade gift.
  • Go to church on Christmas day (or as near to Christmas day as possible)
  • Read or act out the Christmas story
  • Sing carols
  • Go carolling (lots of fun)
  • Read Christmas books as a family
  • Have a Christmas concert
  • Go to a community carols night
  • Drive around your neighbourhood looking at Christmas lights
  • Sit and listen to a child or friend or family member.
  • Serve as a local soup kitchen
  • Wrap a couple of presents up and drop them in to a homeless shelter or woman's refuge
  • Watch a Christmas movie together.  The Nativity From the Church of Jesus Christ of latterday saints is beautiful. ( lds.org )

Get your thinking caps on and think about how you can get more meaning in your Christmas.

Merry Christmas to you all.  Have a wonderful season and day

Being thankful

Through all the blogs I read from America there seems to be one theme at the moment....Thanksgiving.  This is not a celebration we have in NZ but I wish it was.

What a lovely reason to celebrate, being thankful for everything in our lives.  I'd like to think that we take this one day into our hearts and make it stay there all year.

I know though it is very hard to do this as life just take over and sometimes even just gets in the way.  So today I am going to write my own thankful list.  Even after the year our family has I am still so very grateful for so many things

  • That everyone is alive and our house is still standing
  • That I am loved
  • That my children value life (My daughter found the cat with a baby bird last night and carefully cared for it.  Many tear were shed this morning when it had died in the night)
  • A home
  • Democracy....I was able to vote last week in our elections
  • I have a brain that works and functions (most of the time :)
  • I can sew
  • I can draw
  • I have a family
  • I have values
  • I have Christ in my life
  • I have not had to spend any time in jail and I have my freedom
  • I can walk, run (sometimes he he) and jump
  • I can pursue my dream of being an artist so many people can't
  • That I have transport
  • That I can read and write
  • That I have been able to get an education
  • That I am a woman

What are you thankful for???

Inspiration Saturday

I found this wonderful philosophy today.  It certainly put things in perspective.

Charles Schulz Philosophy

The following is the philosophy of Charles Schulz, the creator of the "Peanuts" comic strip. You don't have to actually answer the  questions. Just read the e-mail straight through, and you'll get the point.

1. Name the five wealthiest people in the world.
2. Name the last five Heisman trophy winners.
3. Name the last five winners of the Miss America.
 4. Name ten people who have won the Nobel or Pulitzer Prize.
5. Name the last half dozen Academy Award winner for best actor and actress.
6. Name the last decade's worth of World Series winners.

 How did you do?

The point is, none of us remember the headliners of yesterday. These are no second-rate achievers. They are the best in their fields. But the applause dies. Awards tarnish. Achievements are forgotten. Accolades and certificates are buried with their owners.

Here's another quiz. See how you do on this one:
1. List a few teachers who aided your journey through school.
2. Name three friends who have helped you through a difficult time.
3. Name five people who have taught you something worthwhile.
4. Think of a few people who have made you feel appreciated and special.
5. Think of five people you enjoy spending time with.

 Easier?

The lesson: The people who make a difference in your life are not the ones with the most credentials, the most money, or the most awards. They are the ones that care.

"Don't worry about the world coming to an end today. It's already tomorrow in Australia." (Charles Schulz)

Breakfast at McDonald's
This is beautiful true story

....I am a mother of three and have recently completed my college degree.  The last class I had to take was Sociology.
The teacher was absolutely inspiring with the qualities that I wish every human being had been graced with.  Her last project of the term was called, 'Smile.'  The class was asked to go out and smile at three people and document their reactions.

I am a very friendly person and always smile at everyone and say hello anyway. So, I thought this would be a piece of cake.
Soon after we were assigned the project, my husband, youngest son, and I went out to McDonald's one crisp March morning.
It was just our way of sharing special playtime with our son.
We were standing in line, waiting to be served, when all of a sudden everyone around us began to back away, even my husband did..
I did not move an inch.... An overwhelming feeling of panic welled up inside of me as I turned to see why they had moved.
As I turned around I smelled a horrible 'dirty body' smell, and there standing behind me were two poor homeless men.
As I looked down at the short gentleman, close to me, he was 'smiling'  His beautiful sky blue eyes were full of God's Light as he searched for acceptance.  He said, 'Good day' as he counted
The few coins he had been clutching...
The second man fumbled with his hands as he stood behind his friend. I realized the second man was mentally challenged and the blue-eyed gentleman was his salvation.   I held my tears as I stood there with them.
The young lady at the counter asked him what they wanted.
He said, 'Coffee is all Miss' because that was all they could afford.. (If they wanted to sit in the restaurant and warm up, they had to buy something. He just wanted to be warm).
Then I really felt it - The compulsion was so great I almost reached out and embraced the little man with the blue eyes.  That is when I noticed all eyes in the restaurant were set on me, judging  my every action.  I smiled and asked the young lady behind the counter to give
Me two more breakfast meals on a separate tray.
I then walked around the corner to the table that the men had chosen as a resting spot. I put the tray on the table and laid my hand on the blue-eyed gentleman's cold hand.  He looked up at me, with tears in his eyes, and said, 'Thank you.'   I leaned over, began to pat his hand and said, 'I did not do this for you.... God is here working through me to give you hope.'

I started to cry as I walked away to join my husband and son.. When I sat down my husband smiled at me and said, 'That is why God gave you to me, Honey, to give me hope...'  We held hands for a moment and at that time, we knew that only because of the Grace that we had been given were we able to give.

That day showed me the pure Light of God's Sweet love.
I turned in 'my project' and the instructor read it.
Then she looked up atme and said, 'Can I share this?

I slowly nodded as she got the attention of the class..

She began to read and that is when I knew that we as human beings and being part of God share this need to heal people and to be healed.
In my own way I had touched the people at McDonald's, my son, the instructor, and every soul that shared the classroom on the last night I spent as a college student.

I returned to college, on the last evening of class, with this story in hand.

I graduated with one of the biggest lessons I would ever learn:

UNCONDITIONAL ACCEPTANCE.

Blessings

Sorry for my gap in blogging last week.  It was one of those weeks I don't want to repeat for a while.  I am laughing because I don't want to cry :)  and it is also easier to try to see the goodness in the week rather than the negative.

Between the doctors visits,  family cirsis's, vet visits and sadnesses of last week I found love of families,  support of friends,  the power of prayer,  blessings of safety and a huge amount of patience I didn't know I had.  I love it when through challenges so much growth happens and a positive attitude reigns supreme.

This blog today is one of thanks for spring flowers blossoming and rain falling to give us water in our water tanks.  Thanks for families who love no matter what and for the gift of friendship.  Thanks for the power to stand through the strong winds and to gain greater roots to with stand the winds ahead. Thanks for the understanding to have faith in people even when their actions could dictate to me to think other wise.

What can you be thankful for today?  write a list in your gratitude journal.  How many thnings can you find.

Lifes musings

I lost a friend this week to cancer.  My 6th friend in 7 years.  She was only 53 a a dear woman. My husband also lost a friend of the family this week to cancer and I have just found out a lady I worked with at Paycentre has only days left to live.  I don't know if it is because I am getting older or cancer is more common but so many people I know seem to have been touched by this disease.

Life is so fragile it is here and then gone.  Like a leaf blowing in the breeze floating away.  My friend had lived 53 full and good years.  Full of love, service and work.  She was kind and generous to those she met and loved people before anything else. She was only diagnosed 5 weeks ago and she quietly slipped away with her husband by her side.  It was sudden and unexpected she was given a good chance of recovery.  It was like she was here and then just gone.

How often do we take life for granted?  How often do we take other's lives for granted? Do we value each moment enough?  I don't think we really fully appreciate a lot of what we have until we lose it.  I learnt many years ago to value our family members,  while we have them, after losing a auntie from multiple sclerosis.   I missed her so much.  I was so grateful that my parents took the time to visit her regularly and gave me the opportunity to get to know her.  It taught me so much about love, living now and valuing what we have when we have it.  It is hard to measure the value in that.  Many times I am tempted to protect my own children from death and pain but I have realized it is important for them to learn that death and pain are an important part of life.  My children have gone to many funerals and had many opportunities to help those in pain.  they have grown from it.  They have gained so much empathy and sympathy for others and have such a good understanding of feelings of others.

Each day is precious and valuable,  it is a chance to love, learn and grow.
Make a pledge today to treasure and value what you have.

This wonderful story has really helped me see my life in a different way.  I hope you love it as much as me

One Grocery Store's Most Important Employee....Boy With Down Syndrome
  • --by Barbara Glanz Barbara Glanz I always leave my telephone number and e-mail address with audiences, encouraging them to call me if they have questions or want to share a success story they experienced by adding a personal signature to their work.
About a month after I had spoken to the supermarket folks I received a call from a front-line customer contact person, a nineteen-year-old baggerThe caller, who proudly informed me that he was a Down syndrome youngster, told me his story.
"Barbara, I liked what you talked about!" Johnny said excitedly, "but I didn't think I could do anything special for our customers...
After all, I'm just a bagger.
He decided that every night when he came home from work, he would find a thought for the day. "If I can't find a saying I like," Johnny said proudly, "I think one up!"
With the help of his dad, he copied and cut out each quote of the day. "When I finished bagging someone's groceries, I put my thought for the day in their bag and say, 'Thanks for shopping with us.'"
A month later the store manager called me. He told me...
"When I was making my rounds, I found the line at Johnny's
checkout was three times longer than anyone else's!
It went all the way down the frozen food isle. I was concerned,

so I announced 'Get more cashiers out here; get more lanes
open!' all the while trying to get these people to change lanes.
But no one would move. They all said,
"No, it's okay - we want to be in Johnny's lane -
we want his 'Thought for the Day.'"
Johnny's spirit of service transformed that store. The manager later called and told me how each of his departments was coming up with their own personal touch and all because of one young man with Down syndrome who decided he could make a difference!

I have chosen to find at least one person at the supermarket each week and to tell them they look beautiful.  My children have started to copy me too.  I can make a difference in this one small way.

How can you make a difference today!!

Just one quote today as I wanted to give this one the centre stage.
It was a good one to go with Thursdays Blog entry.

Have a nice day  : )

"Life is too short. Grudges are a waste of perfect happiness. Laugh when you can, apologize when you should and let go of what you can't change. Love deeply and forgive quickly. Take chances. Give everything and have no regrets. Life is too short to be unhappy. You have to take the good with the bad. Smile when you're sad, love what you got, and always remember what you had. Always forgive, but never forget. Learn from your mistakes but never regret. People change, and things go wrong but always remember...
life goes on!"

Negatives into positives

I sometimes get caught up in the negative crushing world of my own self doubt.  Not knowing who I am or where I am going, life sinks around me and I feel like I am falling into a black hole.  When I start sliding into this negativeness I now have the skills and I am well enough to get myself out of the hole.

It hasn't always been like that.  After suffering crippling Post natal depression on 3 different occasions and one episode of anti-natal depression. Negativity was a world I lived in constantly albeit not much fault of my own.  I have found being positive very difficult especially during the times I was sick.   It got to the point that when I felt good I thought something was wrong with me.

But after a lot of work I now am completely well. Now the negativity I have is just normal run of the mill stuff but it can still wear me down.

I have found a few things seem to get me feeling more negative.  When I get forced into a situation by other people,  when I have negativity thrown at me by people, when I have too much happening at once and when A lot of sad or unhappy things happen at one time.

Having some feelings of negativity is O.K. it comes with sadness and dissapointment and stress.  It is what we do with it that is important.  Life is meant to be enjoyed and to be joyful

There are many ways to become more positive and to be nice inside.  Here are some that work for me
  • See the positive side of the experience -The glass half full or half empty scenario.  This can be very hard in some situations so go easy on yourself

  • Talk to someone.  If everything is just getting too much have a rant and a rave to a trusted friend or family member.  I feel better sometimes after I have spoken my fears aloud
  • Write in a gratitude journal.  This is previous post of how you do gratitude journals http://onemotheratatime.blogspot.com/2011/08/gratitude-journal.html
  • Thank people in your life.  From you other half to the postie.  Giving people thanks always makes me feel better
  • Serve others.  It always puts my life into perspective.
  • Say no to unimportant things when life is busy or when the new thing doesn't match up with your priorities
  • Fill you life with positive affirmations IE positive quotes around the house,  positive Friends and family,  time to do what fills your soul
  • Love others and yourself.  It takes alot of wasted energy to hate and to be negative.
  • Train your thought patterns to more positive things (lots of self help books around for this one if your stuck)
  • Give yourself time to get over bad situations.  Be kind to yourself and give yourself some slack if things are just bedlam at this moment.
  • Be real.  See reality in the situation some situations call for a good listener not to see the bright side in the situation.

but I can adjust my sails to always reach my destination."

Gratitude journal

Hi everyone.  What a lovely week it had been.  I am so grateful for my wonderful family who love and support me so much.

My life is filled with so many wonderful blessings.  Do you know if you live in a 1st world country you are part of the 8% of the world who have hot running water.  I had to remind my self of that quite regularly when having a shower in a gravity feed water system :)   There are so many things in my life many of us take for granted.  How often do you see this......

So how do we change those lines and how do we lead a more thankful life?

Are we just saving it for the right moment?

I have found having a gratitude journal really helps finding the right moment in every moment of our lives.  I promised more information on gratitude journals.  So today I am going to show you how to make one!!

  1. First you need a journal or notebook.  What ever you can afford
  2. For a plain book make it your own by decorating it.  Try using magazine clipping so positive words,  pictures,  drawings, or make a slip cover for it.
  3. Read the rules.  You can print this out for your own use.

Gratitude journal

This book is to help you see life through new eyes.

Everything in life can be a blessing depending on how we see it.

Rules

2.  Write at least 5 things you are grateful  for each day
3.   At least 2 things you are grateful for must be about yourself.
